"Singing was something I always did. I really don’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing, even as a little child. I first picked up a guitar when I was ten years old; my parents surprised me with it for my tenth birthday. I started taking lessons when I was thirteen, but only for a few months, and then I just kept teaching myself. It’s weird because in high school, I took a lot of drama and theater classes, rather than music. I always did music privately as a hobby, I think partly because I was nervous to do it in front of other people. I started performing in talent shows, and that helped me get more comfortable singing in front of people. And the reaction I got—that they liked my music and what I was doing—that made me more comfortable too.
