For some of you, it may seem odd that so many transgender people have found each other in such a conservative, rural, southern state; people are often quick to dismiss the residents of states like mine as a bunch of rednecks. But queer and transgender people do in fact exist in Oklahoma, and do deserve to be treated with dignity and basic human kindness. As in many other conservative parts of the country, transgender people in Oklahoma do not have any state-mandated protections.
